For many people in Leiden, De Bruine Boon has been a familiar address for years. The café-restaurant has been located on Stationsweg since 1975, making it part of the city for half a century. Anyone walking from Leiden Centraal towards the city centre will almost certainly pass by it.
Moreover, the location boasts a striking view: from the terrace, you look towards Molen De Valk. As a result, you are literally situated between the station and one of Leiden's most famous monuments.
From breakfast to dinner
De Bruine Boon is a place to walk in throughout the day. In the morning, you can go there for breakfast and coffee, while later in the day the offerings shift towards lunch, drinks, and dinner.
The lunch menu is extensive, including sandwiches, salads, soups, and hot dishes. For dinner, the menu features various meat, fish, and vegetarian dishes.
As a result, you don't necessarily have to come here for one specific moment. A coffee after arriving in Leiden, an extensive lunch, drinks with friends, or sitting down for dinner later in the day: it is all possible in the same place.
Known for the apple pie
One of the products that De Bruine Boon has been known for for years is the apple pie. It has become such an integral part of the business that it has almost become part of the café's identity.
Combined with coffee, it is a popular choice for those who want to sit down for a moment during a day in the city. Especially due to its location close to the station, De Bruine Boon is a logical first or last stop on a visit to Leiden.
Drinks with a view of De Valk
For drinks, there is a choice of beer, wine, and other beverages, complemented by various snacks. In good weather, the terrace is an important part of the establishment.
From there, you look out onto Molen De Valk, while traffic from Stationsweg and the stream of visitors heading towards the city center pass by. It gives De Bruine Boon a unique position: close to Leiden's busiest transport hub, yet at the same time offering one of the city's most recognizable historical views.
Fifty years of Leiden hospitality
The history of the location did not begin as a hospitality business. The building previously served other functions, including a car dealership, before De Bruine Boon opened its doors here in 1975.
Since then, the business has grown along with the area around Leiden Centraal. The station and Stationsweg changed significantly over the years, but De Bruine Boon remained in the same location.
That makes it not only a practical place to eat and drink, but also a hospitality establishment that has itself become part of Leiden's recent history.
