About Loculy

What is Loculy?

Loculy is a platform for digital historical walking and cycling routes through the city and its surroundings. You buy a route, activate it whenever it suits you and go from stop to stop at your own pace; at every stop you read the story of that place on your phone. Besides the routes, Loculy offers Pubtrails (a pub crawl with a quiz), the City guide with local addresses and the free Day Planner.

How does a Loculy digital route work?

You buy the route online and receive an activation link by email. The moment you head out you press start; from then on you have 48 hours of access. Along the way you tap the "I'm at the … stop" button at every stop: the stop opens as soon as you are within 100 metres of the spot, in the order of the route. All you need is a smartphone with internet and location services. There is no app to install.

Do I need an app?

No. A Loculy route works in the web browser of your phone. You install nothing: you open the route from the link in your email and walk from stop to stop in your browser.

Does a route work without internet?

No. During the route you need mobile internet and location services switched on, because each stop is unlocked on the spot along the way. So make sure you have enough data and a charged phone.

In which cities does Loculy have routes?

Loculy grows city by city. The cities page shows where you can walk a route right now and which routes each city has.

In which languages is Loculy available?

The website and the route player are available in Dutch and English. The stories of a route are written in Dutch; if a route is also on the English site, you can walk it in English. In Pubtrails the quiz questions are always in English; the story and the descriptions are in your own language.

Buying and starting

How much does a route cost?

The price is shown on each route's page. You pay per route, not per person: you may do the route with the people who are taking the same walk or bike ride with you.

How can I pay?

You pay securely through our payment partner Mollie, for example with iDEAL. The other payment methods are shown at checkout.

What happens after my payment?

After paying you return to your order page and receive two emails: an order confirmation and, for each route, its own activation link. That link opens your activation page. Your access does not start by opening that page: only when you press "Start my route — 48 hours" yourself do your 48 hours begin.

I have not received an email. What now?

The email usually arrives within a few minutes. Check your spam or promotions folder first. Nothing there? Enter the email address you ordered with on the recovery page; you will then receive an email that lets you open your order on any device. This does not start your route and does not change your access.

Do I have to start the route straight after buying?

No. You decide when to start; at present there is no activation deadline. Your activation link is valid for 90 days. If the link has expired or is lost, you can request a new one free of charge via your order page or the recovery page; the route itself remains available. Your 48 hours of access only begin the moment you deliberately press start.

How long do I have access to a route?

48 hours, counted from the moment you press start yourself. The time then runs continuously. Within those 48 hours you can open the route as often as you like, pause and carry on later where you left off.

Can I buy several routes in one order?

Yes. You can pay for walking routes and Pubtrails together in one order. Each route gets its own activation link and its own 48 hours of access, so you can walk them on different days.

Along the way

What do I need during the route?

A smartphone with an up-to-date web browser, mobile internet and location services switched on. Make sure your phone is charged: an empty battery does not extend your access time.

How is a stop unlocked?

Tap the "I'm at the … stop" button at the stop: it opens as soon as you are within 100 metres of the spot. The stops open in the order of the route. If it does not work, check that location access is switched on in your browser or phone settings; without location a stop cannot be unlocked.

Can I skip a stop or open it manually?

No. Stops only open on the spot itself and in the order of the route. That way the story keeps matching what you see around you.

Can I open the route on another device?

No. When you start, the route is linked to the device on which you pressed start; after that it can only be opened there, also when you come back later. So start the route on the phone you will take with you.

Can I do the route together with others?

Yes. You may do the route with the people who are taking the same walk or bike ride with you; one phone leads and the others follow along. You pay per route, not per person.

My phone died or I closed the route. Can I continue?

Yes. Open the route again within your 48 hours on the same device and you carry on where you were. Your progress is saved on your phone. The 48 hours do keep running: an empty battery, bad weather or a break do not extend your access.

How long does a route take and how far do I go?

That differs per route. Each route page shows roughly how long the route takes, how far it is and how many stops there are. You go at your own pace.

How does a cycling route work?

Just like a walking route, but by bike: the navigation button opens Google Maps in cycling mode. Don't hold your phone while cycling, that is prohibited. Get off at every stop, park your bike safely and then tap the "I'm at the … stop" button. An e-bike is fine; a speed pedelec is subject to the rules for mopeds and may not go everywhere the route leads.

Pubtrails

What is a Pubtrail?

A Pubtrail is a pub crawl with a quiz through the city, for your own group. Only the starting point is known in advance; which pubs come next stays a surprise until you get there. At each pub you check in and play quiz rounds against each other: everyone for themselves or in teams.

How many people can play with one ticket?

One ticket covers exactly one game for your group; the maximum number of players is shown with the ticket on the Pubtrail's page. You set up the game as host; you play along yourself or act as quizmaster. A quizmaster does not count as a player.

How does a Pubtrail work on the night itself?

After payment you receive an email with the link you use as host to set up the game. The game only starts when you press start; from that moment you have 12 hours. At each pub you check in once you are within 50 metres, and you stay at least 15 minutes per venue before the next pub is revealed.

Which language are the quiz questions in?

The quiz questions are in English. The story and the descriptions of the pubs are in your own language.

Cancelling and refunds

Can I cancel my order or get my money back?

As a consumer you have a 14-day cooling-off period from your order. Delivery of a route only begins when you deliberately press "Start my route — 48 hours" on the activation page; just before that you confirm that you want to receive the route now and that you thereby lose your right of withdrawal. You also receive that confirmation in the email after the start. Until that moment you can cancel the purchase without giving a reason: send an email to wouter@loculy.com with your order number, the email address of your order and the route concerned. You get the amount back via the same means of payment. All conditions are on the withdrawal page.

What if there is a technical failure during my route?

If a demonstrable failure on our side makes it impossible to use your route for a substantial part of your access time, we offer an appropriate solution: restoring your access, a new access period or, where the law requires it, a refund. Email us at wouter@loculy.com with your order number.

Discount codes and vouchers

I have a discount code or voucher. How do I use it?

Enter your code at checkout, in the field for a discount code or voucher. A voucher applies to one type of product: a walking route, a cycling route or a Pubtrail. This is stated on your voucher.

Day Planner and City guide

What is the Day Planner?

The Day Planner is free, personal local advice for a day in the city: from hidden coffee spots to special museums and cosy drinks. Loculy combines local tips, beautiful places and walks into a day that suits you, with no obligation and without an account or booking.

What is the City guide?

In the City guide you discover local addresses per city: from food and drink to culture and activities. The City guide is editorially curated and not an automatically filled business directory. Paid listings are marked with the label "Partner" or "Sponsored".

Editorial and partners

Are the stories in a route checked?

Yes. The order of the stops, the stories per place and the practical directions are written and checked before a route goes on sale. Where a source is required, we publish no fact without one. How we work is described on the editorial approach page.

I run a business in the city. Can I be on Loculy?

Yes, partners can become visible in the City guide or along a walking route. Online partner registration is being prepared; until then you can email wouter@loculy.com. Everything about working together is on the for partners page.

Help and contact
