Discover The Hague at your own pace: a historic walking route with stories told where they happened.
The Hague is a city with two faces, and they get along remarkably well. Stately avenues run past the Binnenhof, where Dutch politics has been at home for centuries. A few streets further begins an ordinary, lively city with shopping streets, courtyards and restaurants. Walk from one face to the other and you see where they meet. That is what this walk is about.
A count's court at one end, a modern metropolis at the other: the title says where you are heading. You begin behind the gates of the Binnenhof and walk in about two hours and twelve stops to the Passage. Along the way you stand at the Gevangenpoort, stroll along the Lange Voorhout, look through the fence of Noordeinde and search for the hexagonal tower of the Sint-Jacobskerk. Places you may already know, now with a story attached.
It is about justice and injustice, about prayer and artillery, about governing and shopping. About a square with a dark past and a waterway that disappeared. At every stop you read what happened here, look at old photographs and prints of this exact spot, and get a small assignment or question. The city you thought you knew becomes a city you look at anew.
You walk at your own pace, without a guide and without a group. You buy the route, start when you are in The Hague and then have 48 hours. A coffee or lunch break is always possible; the route waits for you. As soon as you start, your digital goodie bag arrives by e-mail with tips for the way and a button to pick the route up again at any time.
The walk is instructive for young and old, without becoming a lesson. After two hours you stand under the glass of the Passage and look differently at the streets around you. A count's court and a modern metropolis: two sides of one city. After this walk you see them both, on every corner.
You experience this route on location. Each stop unlocks when you reach the spot. During the route you need a smartphone with mobile internet and location services.

About The Hague
Hofstad with stately avenues, a political heart, and a beach within easy reach.
The Hague is a city with two faces that complement each other well. In the centre, stately avenues run past the Binnenhof, where Dutch politics has been at home for centuries. Gates and fences define the landscape here: the Gevangenpoort, the Noordeinde gate. Stroll along the Lange Voorhout and you can feel the tranquility in the streets.
A few streets away begins an ordinary, lively city: shopping streets, courtyards, and a wide selection of restaurants, from the neighborhood life on the Voldersgracht to the glass-fronted shops in the Passage. This is where The Hague does its shopping and drinks its coffee. The Hofstad and the everyday city lie within walking distance of each other.
And then there is the sea. Scheveningen is within cycling distance, so a day in the city can easily end with your feet in the sand. Loculy takes you through both sides of The Hague — with walking routes along the big stories and a city guide full of places the city itself recommends.
