Discover Delft at your own pace: a historic walking route with stories told where they happened.
Delft is a city you think you know after an afternoon, and then it never lets you go. The canals, the Markt with the town hall on one side and the Nieuwe Kerk on the other, the leaning tower of the Oude Kerk: the backdrop is familiar. But if you know where to look, you see a different city. A city of defences and water, of revolt and quiet courtyards, of a devastating explosion and of two men who taught the world to look differently from here.
This route takes you to those places in about two hours and fourteen stops. You begin at the Oostpoort, the only city gate Delft has left, and end on the Paardenmarkt. Along the way you stand on the Beestenmarkt, by the Voldersgracht and the Oude Delft, at the town hall, inside the Prinsenhof and beside Molen de Roos. You pass the homes of Johannes Vermeer and Antoni van Leeuwenhoek and step into two courtyards you would otherwise walk straight past.
At every stop you read what happened here, look at old photographs and prints of this exact spot, and get a small task or question. Sometimes you pause at a bridge railing that has not changed in more than a century. Sometimes you suddenly see a square full of terraces in a whole new light.
You walk at your own pace, without a guide and without a group. You buy the route, start it when you are in Delft and then have 48 hours. A coffee in between, a detour past a shop, carrying on a day later: all of it is fine. As soon as you start, your digital goodie bag arrives by e-mail with tips for the way and a button to pick the route up again at any time.
Orange, masters and power: three words that shaped Delft. After this walk you will see them everywhere.
You experience this route on location. Each stop unlocks when you reach the spot. During the route you need a smartphone with mobile internet and location services.

About Delft
Historic city center on the water, with the Markt as the radiant centerpiece.
Delft is compact, and that is precisely its strength. Everything is within walking distance of the Markt: the two large churches, the town hall, the canals with their little bridges, and the courtyards hidden behind an inconspicuous gate. You don't walk out of the city here; you walk through it, and into a little street time and again.
It is also a city with a great story. Here, the Oranjes held court in the Prinsenhof, here Vermeer painted, and here Van Leeuwenhoek was the first to look at a world no one had yet seen. At the same time, the university provides youthful energy: waterside terraces, small shops in the side streets, and a buzzing square on market days.
Whoever gives Delft a day gets a city in return that feels bigger than it is.
