Between Wassenaar and Katwijk lies a landscape you only truly see once you know where to look. First the sheltered greenery of the Panbos, then the open dunes of Berkheide. It all looks like nature. But how much of what you see here has actually been shaped by people?
This walk takes that question along with it. You come across traces of defence, of drinking-water extraction and of people who tried to grow food on poor dune soil. Sometimes the evidence is as conspicuous as a concrete wall; sometimes it lies in a modest difference in height or in the way a path runs through a valley. You'll discover exactly where it takes you along the way.
It is a nature walk with stories, not a town stroll. Over almost ten kilometres, you read the story of exactly that spot on your phone at eight places, each time with something to look at for yourself. In between, there is plenty of time simply to walk. You don't need to know any plant names or architectural styles to follow along.
You walk at your own pace, without a guide and without a group. You buy the route, start when you are at the Panbos and then have 48 hours. As soon as you start, you receive your digital goodie bag by email, with tips for the way and a button to pick up the route again at any time.
The walk starts and finishes at the main entrance of the Panbos on the Wassenaarseweg. Allow 3½ to 4½ hours, including reading and looking. There is an admission charge for the Panbos and you return there at the end, so keep the closing time in mind. Wear shoes suitable for unpaved paths and a dune climb; this walk is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Afterwards you'll look at the dunes differently: both as nature and as a landscape that people have used in all sorts of ways.

Wassenaar lies between the dunes and the coast, and you notice it as soon as you head outdoors. The Wassenaarseslag takes you straight to the sea. Behind the edge of the dunes, woodland, wet dune valleys and nature that was deliberately given new room alternate. Towards Katwijk lie the Panbos and the dunes of Berkheide.
In the village itself, the scale becomes smaller. Around the Dorpskerk, whose history goes back to the twelfth century, and at the Windlust corn mill, you see that Wassenaar is also a village on a human scale.
