Discover Amsterdam at your own pace: a historic walking route with stories told where they happened.
Amsterdam has a backdrop everyone knows: the Canal Belt, the bridges, the facades mirrored in the water. But behind that backdrop lies a story about money. About a trading company that wove governance, money, city expansion and daily life into one fabric. Once you know that story, you look at the city differently. A facade then becomes a question: who paid for this, and with what?
This route follows the trail of the VOC through Amsterdam, in about two hours and ten stops. You start at the Oost-Indisch Huis and walk from there to the Rokin and the first stock exchange. The route then takes you past the Gouden Bocht and the Huis met de Bloedvlekken to the water of the Amstel. From share to palace on the canal: that is the arc. Street by street, you see how trade and city interlock.
At every stop, you read the story of precisely that place on your phone. Sometimes it is a building you would otherwise walk past, sometimes a street you already knew. You look up, you look around, and the city gains another layer. So four kilometres of walking become a story you piece together yourself.
You walk at your own pace, without a guide and without a group. You buy the route, start when you are in Amsterdam and then have 48 hours. As soon as you start, your digital goodie bag arrives by e-mail with tips for the way and a button to pick the route up again at any time. A coffee, a detour past a courtyard or a terrace by the water: the route waits for you.
The walk ends at the Scheepvaartmuseum, at the VOC ship Amsterdam. There the story becomes tangible, and there is room for the other side: the consequences of that trade and the memory of it. Governance, money, city expansion and daily life: after this walk, you see everywhere in Amsterdam how they are tied together.
You experience this route on location. Each stop unlocks when you reach the spot. During the route you need a smartphone with mobile internet and location services.

About Amsterdam
Canals, neighborhoods with their own character, and something to discover around every corner.
Amsterdam is best explored on foot, or by bike if you want to go further. The Canal Belt is the familiar backdrop, but the real fun is often just outside: in the Jordaan with its narrow streets and traditional brown pubs, in De Pijp around the market, or across the IJ, where the city has a grittier edge.
Anyone who has had enough of the hustle and bustle will quickly find peace: in the Vondelpark, along the Amstel, or in one of the courtyards hidden behind ordinary front doors. Amsterdam is a city you get to know layer by layer. First the image, then the street, then the story behind it.
Loculy helps you with the latter. With walking routes along the stories of the city, from the Dam and the Westerkerk to the Oost-Indisch Huis and the Scheepvaartmuseum, and with a city guide full of places where you can eat, drink, and get lost. This way, you don't just look at Amsterdam, you feel the city.
